From resistance to persistence
Swing Left's 10-year plan to strengthen democracy
After an unprecedented wave of grassroots energy over the past five years, Trump is out of office and Democrats have unified control of the federal government. But the Republican party continues to pursue an increasingly radical strategy of power grabs to maintain minority rule for as long as it can, all while continuing to undermine the integrity of future elections. Democrats made progress in 2018 and 2020, but we still have work to do to protect and expand democracy and defeat the GOP.
We must move from resistance to persistence to continue defending and strengthening our democracy. We must deliver Republicans an historic wave of losses at the federal and state levels to show them that a fight against American democracy itself is not a fight they can win.
Swing Left has a sustained 10-year plan to defeat the anti-democratic movement within the Republican party, dismantle the GOP's advantage in key swing states, and maintain and expand Democratic power at the federal level.
Some exciting changes
We're supporting gubernatorial races: Winning governorships in 2022 will be critical to protecting democracy in 2024 and beyond. Swing Left will target competitive gubernatorial races with an eye towards states where Democrats can prevent unified Republican governance and where we will see critical federal elections in the coming years.
We're supporting select incumbent candidates even earlier: Swing Left is supporting statewide incumbents on our target map for reelection because it is the most strategic way for volunteers and donors to get involved early in the 2022 election cycle. Swing Left has not and will not get involved in contested primaries.
Protect Democratic majorities in Congress
63 U.S. House races / 8 U.S. Senate races / 29 target states
Our chief strategic priority of the 2022 cycle is preserving the Democratic majorities in Congress to continue advancing the Biden-Harris administration’s agenda. We are committed to defending and expanding the narrow Democratic majorities in the U.S. House and Senate.
Because of unprecedented delays in the U.S. Census due to the pandemic, the redistricting process was delayed. Therefore, we will not have a formal target map in the U.S. House until states approve new maps on a rolling basis.
Our target districts will always be selected by focusing on the most competitive races across the country where our work can make the greatest difference, and prioritized in order to maximize the number of Democratic representatives in the next Congress.
Strengthen democracy in the states
7 target gubernatorial races / 7 state legislative target states
Swing Left’s 10-year focus on states requires us to set short-, medium-, and long-term goals. Our target selection in 2022 prioritizes supporting candidates where short-term gains have the greatest potential to help protect democratic outcomes in 2024 (i.e. competitive gubernatorial races), or in states where Democrats have a clear chance to flip the chamber or make durable gains.
Our strategy for building Democratic power in the states centers around three goals:
- Win Democratic governorships in key swing states that hold important federal elections to help protect democracy
- Build Democratic power in the legislatures to win majorities and expand ballot access
- Ultimately win majority control over the partisan redistricting process in 2030
