With the election of Governor Janet Mills in 2018, Democrats achieved a state trifecta with both a majority in the State House and Senate. On the federal level, Maine flipped the critical swing district of ME-02 and helped Democrats win the U.S. House majority in 2018. Holding this district in 2022 will be part of the path towards maintaining a Democratic majority in the House.

What's at stake

Opioid crisis. Over the past few years. Gov. Mills has taken action to support Mainers affected by the opioid crisis, including recruiting and training recovery coaches, opening more recovery centers, expanding the availability of Medication Assisted Treatment, and enhancing prevention efforts in schools. While the crisis is ongoing, continued funding for these measures will help Mainers enter and stay in recovery.

Jobs. Workforce development will defend Maine against economic downturn. Historically, Maine’s workforce has been heavily concentrated in labor industries, and the state has seen enormous negative impacts from previous economic recessions. The State Workforce Board’s plan to support workers, diversify industries, and provide resources for training and continued education will help Mainers be better prepared for any future economic uncertainty.

Infrastructure. 13% of Maine’s roads are in poor condition. The state should receive $2.37 billion in federal aid to help repair and improve roads and bridges over the next five years, thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The funding will also help expand broadband access, improve water infrastructure, and provide more access to electric vehicle charging stations.
