Republicans currently hold a trifecta in the state government. While Indiana’s 1st Congressional District is currently held by a Democrat, the district is competitive this year. IN-01’s highly unionized, post-industrial economy hasn’t elected a Republican since 1931, but Democrats have been losing ground here. Holding this seat is key to holding the U.S. House.

Abortion access. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Republican state lawmakers are working to restrict access to abortions, with many Republicans calling for a statewide ban. Lawmakers have already pledged to consider bills which restrict abortion, which are expected to be signed by Indiana’s Republican governor.

Food insecurity. Indiana’s food insecurity rate is higher than the national average, and has continued to increase over the past 10 years. 12% of Indiana households are food insecure, with an increasing number of Hooziers living in food deserts.

Gun violence prevention. Indiana receives a D- rating from the Giffords Law Center. In 2020, Indiana had the 17th-highest gun death rate in the nation, with 61% of those deaths being suicides. Guns are the second leading cause of death for children below the age of 17 in the state.
