We’re all fired up to flip Virginia blue, and the best way to do that is to talk to voters in person to get out the vote the weekend before the election. So we’ve organized buses for Swing Left volunteers to travel together from DC to volunteer where it’s needed most.
When you hop on the Swing Left bus, you’ll save time, connect with other awesome volunteers, and focus on helping campaigns win instead of worrying about planning your travel.
What are you waiting for? Check out the list of upcoming trips below and book your seats now!
Upcoming Bus Trips
We have three buses heading out to priority areas of Virginia where you can have the biggest impact knocking on doors. There are two day trips and one overnight trip; for our overnight trip we will provide accommodations and you’ll have a chance to note any preferences.
All buses depart from Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002, at 9:00 AM. Day trips return at 8:30 PM same day and the overnight trip to Hampton Roads, VA returns at 8:30 PM on Sunday, November 3rd.
It’s fun, easy, and very reasonably priced! Saving democracy is more fun with friends! So invite your friends, tell your family, and make sure everybody interested gets their tickets right away. After all, our democracy depends on this important work.
It's okay if you've never done this before. Each trip will be led by two bus captains who are experienced volunteers and have spent many hours talking to voters. They’ll train you on everything you need to know to knock on doors and turnout voters in these crucial target areas. Check out this video of our bus program from 2018!
You’re going to be knocking on doors for several hours, so wear clothing you would be comfortable doing that in. T-shirts, jeans, and athletic pants are all great for knocking on doors. Make a note of the weather - a light jacket that you can take on and off easily, or a hoodie you can tie around your waist are also smart. Comfortable walking shoes are a must!
Bring water, snacks, pen(s), sunscreen, and a hat and sunglasses if weather appropriate. Trips are a full day, and while your staging location will almost certainly have food available, you should plan for any specific dietary needs you have. If you want, feel free to bring your own lunch and dinner if you’d like - every rider can carry on two small items (like bags and coolers), but no glass containers.
Please also bring a smartphone or tablet and a portable charger, if you have one.
Most importantly, bring your A game and a positive attitude—you’ll be working hard and having fun all day out there!
Download the MiniVAN app (Apple or Android). You can check out our MiniVAN training guide here, or watch this short video about how to use MiniVAN here.
For our overnight buses, Swing Left will be providing Lyft credits to help people get around. If you purchase a ticket for an overnight bus, download the Lyft app (Apple or Android) if you don’t already have it installed.
Please plan to be at your departure location 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time. We want to make sure we stay on schedule! Bus Captains will help make sure everybody is accounted for.
We are asking that bus travelers participate in two shifts each day: from 12-3pm and 3-6pm (some trips may be slightly different). Take the time you need to make sure you’re hydrated, well-fed, and sunscreened. Take a rest when you need to, but plan to knock a lot of doors - it’s how we’ll win!
Day trips will be approximately 2 hours away from the departure location. Overnight trips will be approximately 3.5 - 4 hours each way. So plan for a long (but fun and hugely impactful!) day.
Because we get up-to-the minute information from campaigns about where you’re needed most, your ultimate destination is subject to change. We will let you know where we are sending you up to a week in advance. Don’t worry: the distance will be about the same, but the impact you make will be huge!
We have chartered buses through a private bus company. The buses are clean and have comfortable leather seating. There is no wifi on-board and there are a handful of power outlets. The buses will not have restrooms, but we are building in time at rest-stops on each leg of the journey.
We’ll connect you with your bus captain well ahead of the trip. Your bus captain will email you a reminder of arrival logistics the day before the event. On the day of the event, they may also text you real-time updates of any issues, delays, or reminders. Please be sure to use an email address you check often so you don’t miss any updates about your trip as well as a cell phone number that will reach you on the day of your trip.
There will be two trained Bus Captains on every bus. They’ll be your primary point of contact from the time you get on the bus, until you disembark and head home. You may even hear from them before your trip!
When you buy a ticket you are reserving a seat on a bus. That seat is yours for a day of democracy! If something comes up and you need to give your seat to someone else we need to know their name and contact info so we can make sure they have all the trip details. If you purchase a ticket and then need to give it to someone else, please reach out to us at [email protected]
Flexibility and patience are key. Things might not go as planned and campaigns have a lot of work to do in a short amount of time. There may be times when you’re feeling frustrated or tired. You may have to wait for longer than you’d like at some points. We encourage you to roll with it, have fun, and bring positive energy to the campaign offices. The bus captains will be there to help things move along as smoothly as possible, and we’re in regular contact with the campaigns to make sure things go as according to plan as possible.
