December 12 - 15 Houston
Days of Action
Lead by Commit to Canvass & Swing TX Left
Texas is on the brink of becoming a blue state. Democrats are nine seats away from a majority in the Texas state House: thirteen Republican seats are flippable, with five of them in in Greater Houston metropolitan area. Texas has also three flippable US Congressional Districts, one of which, TX 22, is in the Houston metropolitan area. Winning the state’s 38 electoral votes would be a game changer for Democrats.
Between 2014 and 2018, the Texas voter rolls grew by 1,800,000 voters, with the majority consisting of women and people of color. Looking forward to 2020, there remain 2,600,000 unregistered voters in Texas who are likely to vote Democratic if registered. Additionally, there were 2,400,000 registered but non-voting African American, Hispanic, and Asian American voters in 2018 who are primed to be mobilized to vote in a presidential year.
There is momentum in Texas, and we could make huge gains there with your help!
We will be learning about the key issues in Texas elections on the morning of December 12, engaging voters by canvassing on the afternoon of December 12 through 14, and then making a plan of action to flip Texas blue on December 15.
Thursday December 12 Morning
We will learn from presentations from (i) APT PAC pursuing civic engagement, voter registration and GOTV aimed at apartment voters who are key to adding more diverse voters to any turnout model; (ii) Battleground Texas aimed at turning Texas blue by engaging volunteers in their neighborhoods in impacting local, state and national elections; (iii) Student Voter Initiative, a non-partisan statewide high school student voter registration and education program.
Thursday December 12 Afternoon through Saturday December 14
We will knock doors, talk about voting, hand out mail-in voter registration forms, and leave voter registration door hangs and candidate literature in several precincts involved in the runoff elections for Houston city council and mayor, in partnership with Harris County Democratic Party, Southwest Democrats and Swing TX Left.
Sunday December 15
We will strategize with representatives of Democratic campaigns in the Houston Metropolitan Area that aim at flipping the Texas House of Representatives and turning Texas Blue in 2020, including the campaigns of Eliz Markowitz (HD 28 - Fort Bend County), Lizzie Fletcher (Elected 2018, TX-7 Harris County), and Sri Kulkarni (running 2020, TX-22, Fort Bend County).

Housing and Transportation Info
We are a grassroots organization and so we ask you to be self-reliant during this weekend of action. Please bear in mind that Swing Left will not provide or broker meals, accommodations, or transportation for the weekend.
But, once you register below, we will connect you with other volunteers heading to Houston so you can coordinate among yourselves to share rides and rooms. We will also be working with local Houston Swing Left activists to identify supporter housing and rides (although we cannot promise there will be supporter housing or rides for everyone).
We’ve watched what our self-starter activists accomplished in 2018, and we’re excited to unleash that can-do attitude in 2019!
Please fill out this form before making travel arrangements, so we can confirm the trip with you. Every participant should fill out the form individually, including couples.
Please read our Swing Left Organizers Liability Statement before you sign up.
