While Ohio Republicans have used their trifecta in the state government to pursue a right-wing agenda at the state level, updated congressional maps are poised to provide Ohio Democrats with new opportunities after a court-mandated redraw. Democrats will need to capitalize on these newly competitive races and hold key Democratic seats in order to maintain their congressional majority in November.
Winning Ohio
Our main objectives in Ohio are to win the state's U.S. Senate race and three competitive congressional elections in OH-01, OH-09, and OH-13.
What's at stake
Pandemic recovery. Ohio's Republican-led response to COVID allowed the virus to spread faster. Republicans in the Ohio House introduced legislation to limit COVID safety protocols even as the virus surged. In states with Republican governors like Ohio, the spread of COVID-19 was 8% higher on average than in states with Democratic governors.
Reproductive rights. Abortion access is under attack. Under Ohio's Republican trifecta, abortion access has been severely limited. In 2019, the state passed one of the most restrictive laws in the country which excluded cases of rape and incest. State GOP leaders continue to test the waters of increasingly restrictive legislation, with an intent to trigger a complete abortion ban if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Infrastructure. Ohio received a C- grade on its infrastructure report card. The Infrastructure and Jobs Act that President Biden signed into law will deliver billions of dollars to repair Ohio's failing highways, bridges, and other crucial infrastructure. Facing a worldwide semiconductor shortage, Pres. Biden has also expressed interest in ramping up U.S. microchip production, and bills supporting this industry are moving through Congress at his urging. This legislation would potentially serve to help create jobs in Ohio, where Intel plans to build the world’s largest chip-making complex.
