Florida has long been a critical swing state that has drifted towards Republicans in recent years. In 2022, Democrats have the opportunity to regain ground in the state and break Republicans' 12-year control over state government by unseating Governor Ron DeSantis.

Winning Florida

Our primary objectives in Florida are to flip the governorship and win at least one competitive U.S. House race in FL-02.

What's at stake

Health care. Florida is one of twelve states that has not yet expanded Medicaid. According to the Florida Health Justice Project in 2019, about 455,000 Floridians fall into the coverage gap, meaning they do not have access to affordable coverage. 58% of Floridians who fall into the coverage gap are people of color.

Voting rights. In 2021, Governor DeSantis signed a bill which restricts the right to vote. The bill includes limits on ballot drop boxes, new voter ID requirements, and more rights for partisan election observers. A number of lawsuits have been filed challenging S.B. 90.

Reproductive rights. The Republican-controlled Florida State Legislature has been working rapidly to pass legislation similar to what was passed in Mississippi in 2018 and in Texas in 2021, which would reduce access to reproductive health. In March 2022, state lawmakers passed H.B. 5, a bill to ban most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
